Huge, eye-catching pieces of artwork have recently added spice to the cafeteria in the high school. The 3D pieces are the work of students in Mr. Hershey's Intro to Painting classes. Hanging from the ceiling, the works dominate several walls and have definitely become a visual center point.
After looking at works by Elizabeth Murray, the students formed groups of 4 - 5 members. Each student came up with their own ideas and designed a prototype out of illustrations board. Afterward, the groups convened and had to mutually agree on the elements that they liked from each member's prototype. That led to the group developing a design that utilized the various elements and melded them into one cohesive work.
The pieces are constructed almost entirely from cardboard that was salvaged from boxes that had contained Smart Boards recently purchased by the school district. After construction, the students painted their works with tempera paint.
