Students in Mr. Joel Bischoff's "Going Green" class go the year off to a scorching start as they explored the power of solar energy by making prototypes of their own solar ovens.
To begin the process, they divided into pairs, did some research on various designs, drew sketches, and then built and tested their ovens.
The requirement was that the oven had to hold a 12" X 12" X 3" pan of water. Most of materials used were cardboard, plastic wrap, and aluminum foil.
On a day where the ambient air temperature was 78 degrees, all of the ovens were able to push the water temperature over 100 degrees with the highest reading being 158 degrees. The oven that achieved that reading was built by junior Mike Sinyagin and senior Josh Holsinger.
