Students in Mr. Hershey’s Advanced Design class recently complete a study of Pop Art and there isn’t anyone in the school who isn’t aware of their efforts. That is because their finished works are not only on display throughout the school, their size dominates the landscape.
The unit began with a study of some pop artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Claes Oldenburg. Then, working in groups of 2-4, the students had to choose an item from popular culture and create an oversized representation of it. They used cardboard, paper-mache, and tempera paint. The unit also involved the study of color theory. The students were only given the primary colors to work with and had to mix as necessary for the other colors their pieces demanded.
The pieces will be on display until the district art show and after that the students will get to decide who gets to take the piece home to display in their homes. It may come down to whoever has the tallest ceilings!
