Hello and welcome to Highland Elementary School. Highland is one of four elementary schools in the Ephrata Area School District. The school building is located three blocks north of Main Street, or route 322, in a very quiet neighborhood. The building was built in 1926 and was the original Ephrata High School for many years. After a number of renovations, it has become a wonderful neighborhood elementary school that services students in kindergarten through fourth grade. The staff of 56 teachers and support staff are looking forward to welcoming 400 students for the 2011 – 2012 school year.
With the school mission statement “achieving success one student at a time,” the outstanding faculty and staff at Highland strive to provide a quality education that meets the needs of all students. The expectations are set at a very high level and support is provided so that all students can meet these expectations. We are seeing the results of the exceptional efforts of the students and staff through national, state and local assessments.
Each student’s educational foundation is built on a strong emphasis in reading, language arts and math. Teachers make data-based decisions for individual students, groups and classes to maximize their potential, while maintaining a balance to ensure mastery of a skill. Science and socials studies are used to reinforce reading and writing skills, while providing students with hands-on learning activities, history and current events. Students are instructed in art, music, library and physical education weekly and are provided with technology and social/emotional skill building periodically throughout the month.
The PTO at Highland is vested in supporting the school through assemblies, after-school events and fund raising projects to enhance student enjoyment. In the past year they have sponsored Trunk or Treat, Family Dance Night, Family Movie Night, Race for Education and a Year-End Picnic. All events are organized and run by the parent volunteers and have been extremely well attended by students, parents and staff.
Our aim at Highland is to help students build the foundation to be life-long learners, aspiring leaders and productive citizens. We accept the joy, eagerness and challenges that our students bring to school each day and we look forward to serving their needs by providing them a quality education in an environment that is caring, friendly and safe.
