Countywide Math24 Tournament
story and photos by Heather Mohr
Gifted students in grades 4-8 recently advanced to the countywide Math24 tournament at Lancaster-Lebanon IU13.  On Monday, May 16th, eight students from grades 4 and 5 competed in the 4th and 5th grade Math24 tournament.  On Tuesday, May 17th, eight students from grades 6, 7, and 8 competed.  The event was a bracket style competition where students could advance to the top 16 semi-finalist round.  From the semi-finalist round, the top four went on to compete for the 1st place trophy.  During the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade tournament, Marissa Kopp was named a “Table Winner” after she beat all the other players at her table.  In addition, Trevor MacKenzie scored high enough to become a semi-finalist and compete against the seven other top students!

Students enjoyed meeting and socializing with other Math24 enthusiasts from nearby districts and enjoyed lunch before returning to school.  Many thanks to the elementary LEAP teacher, Rachel Nice, and the intermediate/middle school LEAP teacher, Heather Mohr for chaperoning the trip and serving as proctors for the tournament.  Congratulations to all Ephrata participants!
